Outside the Lines Original: The Sharp Family
When you think of Ouachita Parish, there are many families that come to mind, but one family that stands out is the Sharp Family. From district judges to an actor and more, the Sharp family has been steadfast in paving a way for the future generations for years.
Mind is the muscle that moves you.Mr. James Sharp
We had the privilege to sit down with the five incredible siblings of the Sharp family to learn a little bit about their story. Carl, Etheldra, Cecil, Alvin, and Monti shared their trials, triumphs, and laughter with us.
It all began with James Sharp Jr. and Barbara Lois Wilson Sharp. As we spoke with the siblings, it became clear just how remarkable their parents were. You see, during a challenging time for many, Mr. and Mrs. Sharp refused to give in or give up. Instead, they pushed through every obstacle to succeed and provide the best life for their children.
Carl V. Sharp, a retired district judge, shared that their dad instilled in them the belief that they were capable of anything. In an era where many felt “inferior,” Mr. James Sharp refused to let his kids succumb to such notions.
Alvin R. Sharp, a current district judge, recounted a story about being placed in a remedial reading class despite knowing how to read. He knew to advocate for himself and talked to his teacher. Later, he shared that another teacher, Mrs. Carl insisted he could read “Les Misérables.” Though he was confused at the time, he now realizes that she was showing him how capable he was - just like his dad always did.
When reminiscing about their childhood, laughter and smiles filled the room. Etheldra J. Sharp, the only girl among the siblings, fondly recalled riding bikes around town. She shared that her brother Carl would round everyone up and say, “to the bat mobile” and off they’d go on an adventure. But Cecil J. Sharp made sure we knew they had to be home by the time their dad arrived for family dinner. While they cherished the special family dinners made by their mom, they also had a few favorite spots around town.
They shared stories of hopping into the back of their dad’s truck and heading to Shipley Donuts - a family favorite. Alvin reminisced about their mother taking them to Bond's Bakery for special treats, noting that “sister always saved her cookies until the end of the day and didn’t share.” We can’t blame her though; the cookies sound worth saving!
Monti G. Sharp, an actor and artist, shared his experience of being one of the first black kids at Ouachita Elementary School. Monti reflected on not fully realizing the significance of this at his young age, but like his siblings, he credits his confidences to his parents.
In fact, Monti went on to be what his siblings referred to as “Mr. Ouachita.” His vibrant personality won people over from day one and continues to win hearts as an actor and artist in Los Angeles.
From navigating the times of segregation to advocating for justice and cherishing life with loved ones, the Sharp family has inspired more than they’ll ever know.
In celebrating Black History Month, we're reminded of the remarkable stories of resilience, courage, and perseverance that have shaped our communities. The Sharp family's journey serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the power of family bonds. We are grateful to Carl, Etheldra, Cecil, Alvin, and Monti for generously sharing their memories and experiences with us.
