Outside the Lines Original: Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo
Welcome to the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo, where history, nature, and adventure converge to create a century-long saga of wonder in Monroe, Louisiana!
Back in 1923, when the zoo first opened its gates in Forsythe Park, it boasted just 15 animals eager to meet curious visitors. Fast forward to 1961, under the leadership of former Mayor Jack Howard, the zoo embarked on an ambitious expansion plan.
The acquisition of 137 acres of land brimming with potential marked a new chapter in the zoo's evolution. With a strategic master plan in hand, the zoo officially adopted its current name "Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo.” As the zoo grew, so did its array of attractions, including the introduction of a boat ride that allowed visitors to get up close and personal with the wildlife.
Today, the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo stands tall as a beloved attraction by locals and visitors. With over 300 animals from 130 different species, visitors are treated to a fascinating array that never fails to captivate.
Ask Lisa Taylor, the General Curator, what sets this zoo apart, and she'll tell you, "Where else can you go on a safari in town?" Indeed, the zoo offers unique experiences like no other, from leisurely boat rides to encounters with tortoises eagerly munching on lettuce.
But the excitement doesn't end there! With ongoing upgrades to the Louisiana Purchase section, visitors can anticipate even more interactive thrills. Picture yourself feeding alligators or marveling at the playful antics of beavers and otters—it's an adventure unlike any other!
Yet, amidst all the entertainment, education remains the zoo's cornerstone. Mark Henderson, the Education Curator, is on a mission to enlighten visitors about the wonders of the animal kingdom and the importance of conservation. Zoo Ambassadors are on hand to provide insights into each animal. Landry, the "super alligator," impresses visitors with his calm demeanor, offering a unique chance to connect with these remarkable creatures.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the dedication of volunteers and community members. Phillip Crawley, the Zoo Director, attests to the invaluable support they receive, from preparing snacks for the animals to keeping the grounds pristine.
As the Louisiana Purchase Gardens and Zoo commemorates a century of enriching our lives, we eagerly anticipate what the future holds. Keep an eye on their social media channels for updates on the upcoming 100th birthday bash, complete with cake and a parade of animal ambassadors. Here's to another hundred years of adventure, education, and unforgettable memories at this beloved institution!
