Outside the Lines Original: Chris Lewis and the Coney Island Connection
Although Chris Lewis grew up in the restaurant industry, it’s passion for his community that gets him out of bed every morning. When Coney Island Connection closed down, the community was devastated. But after years of experience working with his mother, Chris knew he was ready to take over a restaurant of his own.
After holding a spot in the town's heart for many years, the old Coney Island Connection owner moved to Atlanta to retire. Although his mother felt she was past the point of running a restaurant on her own, she knew Chris would love the opportunity. Being born and raised in West Monroe and an alumni of West Monroe High school, he was proud to redecorate the diner to represent the colors of his hometown and school. Not only did he add to the visual aesthetic of the place, but Chris also added a few new menu items including fried pickles, nachos, funnel cakes, and more. With more and more people showing up to eat his locally famous food, he had to add onto the building. Coney Island Connection went from seating 32 to over 70.
“The community has been wonderful,” Chris said. “I just can’t thank them enough. I do my best to support them and they support me tremendously.”
Coney Island Connection is not only loved by the people, but Chris makes sure it gives back to the people as well. They sponsor one business in Monroe-West Monroe each week to feed lunch and always help out with sponsoring the school sports teams. You’ll often see Chris speaking at local schools, partnering with local officials to check on senior citizens, and even volunteering at the food bank. Coney Island Connection also does a yearly night where half of the proceeds from Coney Island Connection go to the Ronald McDonald House.
One special way his supporters showed their appreciation was by nominating him for Mardi Gras King of the Krewe De Riviere. Chris had no idea that was taking place, but he was honored to be recognized for his love and passion for Monroe-West Monroe. He was glad to be supported by his friends, family, and town.
On a daily basis, Chris and his family work at the restaurant hands on. His mother is there each and every day working in the same way he did with her growing up. Chris is proud of his food and happy with the joy it brings to the people who come in every day. The Chili Cheese Dogs, Po'boys, and Tamales are his most popular dishes between orders. But when it comes to his personal favorite, there is no question.
“I would say my favorite is the Chili Cheese Dog,” Chris said. “I love them, and they are one of the biggest menu items.”
Coney Island Connection is growing and only becoming busier by the day. Chris intends to give back to the community every day and keep making the food that makes everyone smile. If you want to check out the famous cooking of Coney Island Connection, you can visit their location in West Monroe!
