Jay Howell: Innovating Hospitality in the Heart of Monroe
Ever wondered what it takes to excel in both dentistry and the restaurant business? Monroe native Jay Howell has found the perfect recipe to blend these two worlds, transforming the local hospitality scene. In downtown Monroe, Jay oversees Cotton, Planter’s, and the Eli, all local favorites nestled in a historic building over 150 years old. Additionally, you can find him at the Okaloosa and Aaron’s Pharmacy & Diner, further enriching the community's dining experiences.
Jay’s passion for hospitality began early in life, influenced by a family devoted to cooking. Growing up on a cattle farm with a family garden, Jay gained a deep appreciation for fresh ingredients. These experiences shaped his approach to the restaurant industry.
Jay later moved to New Orleans to attend dental school, but after Hurricane Katrina struck, he relocated back to Monroe. When he discovered the J.S. Block building, an old 1800s mail-order liquor business, was for sale in Downtown Monroe, he saw an opportunity. In 2005, Jay bought the building and began renovations. "My passion for restoration and for bringing value to overlooked things came together in the restaurant business," Jay said.
Restoring the building came with challenges. Jay compares his love for restoration to his work in dentistry, noting the similarity in restoring something to its former self. The building still showcases its original brick and windows. Jay describes it as "a living, breathing document of time," highlighting the continuous interaction with history throughout the restoration process.
In 2008, Jay opened Coda Bar & Grill, inspired by the House of Blues. He aimed to create an elevated version of Southern food. In 2013, Coda Bar & Grill transitioned to Restaurant Cotton, focusing on refined Southern cuisine and highlighting the culture of Northeast Louisiana.
Jay’s restaurants are known for their unique concepts, with 3 restaurants housed in the same historic building. Restaurant Cotton pays tribute to the building’s history, which once housed a cotton gin. Incorporating the river into Cotton's concept was important to Jay. Planter’s draws on the idea of sharecroppers and planters visiting the bar, offering a bird’s-eye view of the town. For the Eli, Jay wanted to create a place that reflected his tastes—a spot where he would love to eat and drink. The furniture, selected over time, gives a timeless feel, incorporating pieces from the Delta. “The brand is a representation of the food and drink in Monroe,” Jay says. The Okaloosa property evolved from Jay’s quest for a great fish sandwich and his desire for a laid-back, casual eatery.
Uniqueness is evident in every dish at Jay’s restaurants. Each dish has a story, drawing from collaborations with chefs and inspiration from Jay’s travels. The cuisine combines simplicity with a Southern twist. Dishes like the upside-down Chicken Caesar salad and sausage and crawfish dumplings showcase this creative approach.
Jay credits his team for managing his restaurants and helping balance his busy schedule. He wakes up every day excited to see what’s in store for his businesses. Jay’s advice for anyone entering the hospitality industry is to be passionate about creating moments and memories for people. Always keep learning and remember why you do it. He compares hospitality to dentistry, noting that both require years of learning and practicing your passion.
