Honoring Our Heroes: The Freedom Trees at Chennault Aviation and Military Museum
As the holiday season approaches in Monroe-West Monroe, one tradition stands tall, reminding us of the sacrifice made for our freedom: the Freedom Trees at the Chennault Aviation and Miliary Museum. For over a decade, these trees have served as a tribute to the men and women who have served and are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, offering a way for the community to reflect and gives thanks during the holiday season.
The tradition started 12 years ago, when Mary Tyrrell, a local woman whose husband was a disabled veteran approached the museum and convention and visitors bureau with a desire to honor his military service and those of other veterans. Tyrrell, along with others, saw the trees as a way to remember and celebrate the sacrifices made by service members.
The first tree quickly became a symbol of gratitude. Over the years, this single tree has grown into six, each representing one of the six branches of the U.S. military: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Space Force.
Today, each tree is decorated with ornaments and mementos honoring the brave men and women who have worn the uniform. From photographs to military patches and more, these trees are filled with personal stories of sacrifice and dedication. Community members are encouraged to contribute their own items to the trees, ensuring the display grows each year.
The Freedom Trees lighting ceremony takes place annually on Veterans Day, November 11, marking the official start of the holiday season at the museum. This solemn yet festive event includes a Missing Man Ceremony led by West Monroe’s ROTC, powerful speakers, and the emotional playing of taps.
The tree lighting is not just about decorations – it’s a moment of reflection and gratitude for the freedom we enjoy because of the sacrifices of our veterans and active duty. As the lights come on, there’s a collective sense of honor and appreciation, reminding us of all the people who have made these holidays possible.
If you’re looking for a way to make your holiday season more meaningful, consider visiting the Freedom Trees at the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum anytime from November 11 – December 31. Take a moment to reflect, give thanks, and honor those who have given so much.
