Herons on the Bayou in Monroe-West Monroe
In 2019, a flock of 51 beautifully painted herons landed in Monroe-West Monroe thanks to the creative genius of Brook Foy, the creator of Herons on the Bayou and community project powerhouse. This project brought art, business, and the community together. In 2021, 36 herons were added. After the final wave of herons make their debut in June of 2023, 100 herons will have found their home in Ouachita Parish. Keep reading to hear Foy share a bit about the project.
The heron was so intriguing to me because it was an animal that we have here that you must look for and find.Brook Foy, ULM Assistant Professor of Art, Downtown Arts Alliance President
Why a heron?
"The heron was the culmination of many beautiful conversations with friends, artists, community leaders, and strangers. We went through so many ideas and when the Heron was mentioned it IMMEDIATELY stuck and felt right to all involved. It can be found about anywhere near water and we have plenty of that."
What does art do for a community?
"Art means culture and opportunity. The arts have the opportunity to impact everything from visual landscape, economy, infrastructure, educational system and more. Art can shape a community and that is my driving force for Monroe-West Monroe."
Do you have a favorite heron?
"YES...but I can't tell you."
