Big Momma's Fine Foods: A Tradition of Family and Southern Comfort in Monroe
Located in Monroe, Big Momma's Fine Foods stands as a testament to the power of family, community, and the love for home-cooked Southern cuisine. With a rich history spanning over 25 years, this beloved restaurant offers more than just meals; it provides a warm, welcoming experience that feels like a home away from home.
The journey of Big Momma's Fine Foods began with a dream. The restaurant's founder Dorothy Gilbert, affectionately known as Big Momma, moved to Monroe from the small town of Winfield with her family. She juggled two jobs, working as a housekeeper and at Bancroft Bag for 23 years, all while nurturing her dream of opening her own business. When she retired, she invested everything she had into making that dream a reality, and thus, Big Momma's Fine Foods was born.
"What makes Big Momma's cuisine special is the love and care that goes into every dish," explains Big Momma's daughter Deidre Mathis. "If you don't enjoy what you're doing and cook with love, it's not going to taste right." This philosophy is evident in their menu, which features Southern staples like fried chicken, smothered pork chops, hot water cornbread, mustard greens, and black-eyed peas.
Family is at the heart of Big Momma's Fine Foods. Over the years, Big Momma's children, grandchildren, and extended family have all played vital roles in the restaurant's operation. From working their first jobs bussing tables to becoming key members of the team, the family ensures that the restaurant retains its authentic, welcoming atmosphere.
"My brother Darryl Gilbert and I have been working here all these years," shares Deidre. Big Momma’s Fine Foods is more than just a restaurant, it’s a pillar of the Monroe Community that's committed to helping those that need it. "You might just be passing through, but you can come here, get a job, and a new beginning.”
At Big Momma’s, customers are more than patrons, they’re family. One particularly touching story involves a long-time customer who battled breast cancer. "She wanted us to bake her a cake before she went for treatment," recalls Deidre. "We prayed for her, and she came back to tell us she was cancer-free. Moments like that are why we do what we do."
When you walk into Big Momma’s Fine Foods, you will instantly feel that love. From the long line of customers greeting each other to the family and staff asking about your day, you’ll know you will be coming back for that sweet Southern kindness.
But that’s not all that will keep you coming back - the food will have you hooked. Customers visit for their famous hot-water cornbread, mac and cheese, meatloaf, and desserts. However, we knew we had to ask Deidre what her perfect order was. Fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, mustard green, candied yams, and of course, hot water cornbread. Darryl’s perfect meal is almost the exact same with fried chicken, rice, candied yams, and hot water cornbread. But, no meal is complete without a drink, and Deidre recommends a cup of Kool Aid or a glass of sweet tea to feel like you are back at your grandma’s house.
"Big Momma's Fine Foods is more than just a place to eat; it's a community hub where love and good food come together," reflects Deidre. Whether you're a local or just passing through Monroe, a visit to Big Momma's promises a taste of authentic Southern hospitality and a meal that feels like home. Come for the food, stay for the family, and leave with a full heart and a satisfied palate.
